I feel as if I'm rewarded to post things that people hate. Why? Well, clicking the notification icon to find out that someone recommends your post is a lot less interesting then someone who actually took the time to respond to you. I mean, look at this list, what do you see? I see a whole bunch of potential conversations gone to waste.

Also, those of you recommending this post deserve a special place in hell ^^

I think it's semi-equivalent to liking your comment. Trying to add to your comment would essentially contribute zilch, so recommending it is kind of similar to the way you like a comment on Facebook.

Ugh, I can imagine all the false hits.

It is the same concept, but do we really need to be notified in the same manner?

A running recommendation counter would be far more fun to watch then the false hope that someone took the time to respond to you.

Well, sorry everybody for all the recommends.

I generally agree. Its such a letdown to see a notification and its just a recommend. Its not like they mater anyway since you could have 400 recommendations and you wont be picked for COTD, or have your story picked for the FP. Who is recommended to?

I think I got up to 85 before I lost count on one comment. Something about the smart car being strong but not safe.

A better system would only notify you when people you are following recommend you. Then at least you get to know when people you remember/trust/care for etc, are reading your posts.

I just don't think we need them. You liked it or your didn't, what do I care if you put your finger print on it. If you really liked it, comment on it.

I dunno..

I would much rather have a recommendation and be able to hover over the link that hints at what my post was, than get an "LOL" or a "+1" and not know what they liked.

I could see them being a valuable tool if the number of total recommendations a user has received was viewable, or if a certain number of recommendations gave a user account more privileges. Maybe the Kinja gods can view this kind of thing, but as the system is currently implemented, it doesn't provide a lot of value to the user other than bringing comments closer to the top. From what I can tell, comment length has a greater weight on positioning than recommendations, or at least as much.

Don't like recommendations? Post worse! It's not hard. Just follow my lead.

I guess it's better than getting a +1 tacked on to a comment or post you made. At least you can find out exactly which post the person liked. But Recommendations are a bit disappointing. I'd much rather have a conversation.

That is equally terrible, perhaps we simply need a stat page showing various things like current number of recommendations, top ten posts a user has with the most amount of recommendations etc. A personal post of the day. etc.

As opposed to recommending this I will respond with: Yes. That was my first thought.

It all comes down to how you use it. I give out a lot of recommendations, but I don't use them in place of commenting - I still comment as much as I ever have, but I also give out a bunch of recommendations on top of that. I sill comment if I have something constructive to say, but if I don't have anything to add to the conversation, but want to indicate my agreement with a point that has been made, the "recommend" button works just fine, as opposed to a comment that merely says "+1" (which a lot of people were doing for a while, and I found rather annoying).

My issue isn't over the fact that it's possible. I don't want to see them go away either.

I simply don't want to be notified every time someone enjoys a silly cat picture I post.

A stats page or a running counter would be superior to xbobjoe from somewhere on the internet hitting recommend when I'm awaiting a response to a $kaybait post.

Here is a potentially terrible idea.

Create a virtual currency, where you can spend recommendations on trivial things, like silly images of trophies/gadgets/cars/etc in a special trophy room page of your personal profile.

Got it. I would be nice if we could customize our notifications to turn off "recommendations" if we wanted to.

I use it typically when someone responds to me, and I appreciate their response, but their response typically does not warrant further response.

Also, recommended.

I'm coming back because I actually have something to add.

For some of us, the validation of having our post recommended doesn't carry much. Or so we'd like to believe.

But I'll tell you what, when I had Sui Generis recommend four of my posts in one day, I was thrilled. The same goes for when Slay Belle, or Ruthless, or any of the editors/staff on ANY of the sites recommends a comment of mine.

And for those small moments of joy, I'll deal with the rest of the notifications. Because dammit, for one tiny moment in time, Ray Wert actually liked me.
